Black and White Photo Challenge

Good afternoon everyone! Sarah and I are doing the 5 Day Black and White Photo Challenge on Facebook, and we've been enjoying it so much that I thought we should share on here as well...

The Black and White Photo Challenge works by nominating a fellow photographer to join the Challenge by posting a black and white image once a day for 5 days and telling a little story about the image with the post.

I will be adding our new posts on here each day for 5 days. Enjoy!

DAY ONE: Sarah

This photo was taken almost 4 years ago while running around New York City with my brother. I was ECSTATIC when he moved to the city because it gave me the opportunity explore Brooklyn intimately—now Harlem—and we always end up at some underground bar playing pool and listening to jazz. It was a cold December afternoon and it was the first time I made it to the NYC Apple store. I couldn't stop staring at the transparent staircase and dark figures moving above. It felt like a sci-fi movie and one of these footprints are my brothers. The city, and all it has to offer, will always be tied to him and I.

Oh yes, one of the infamous bunny photos will be my DAY ONE:

So I'm taking you back to my Sophomore year at University of North Florida when I took the Black and White Film Photography class--the defining moment when I absolutely fell in LOVE with photography completely and not to mention, film photography. I used to spend hours and hours in the Dark Room at UNF; one night even having the campus cops looking for me because no one could find me or knew where I was.

I have sooo many bunny favorites, its hard to pick just one to show. If I remember correctly, I believe this assignment was something to do with taking something out of its normal environment and photographing it in an unusual one.

DAY TWO: Sarah

Mai Chau, Vietnam.
We arrived on bicycles and this woman welcomed us with her husband. I was unsure if she'd had her photo taken before, when I showed her on the screen of my camera she gave a huge toothless smile. This was one of the hottest days in Vietnam (and our entire trip) but the beauty of this valley and people made it all worth it. I only wish I knew her name.

DAY TWO: Lindsay

This image is from another milestone time in my photography career: learning studio lighting.

I took a Studio Lighting course about 5 years ago at FCCJ (now Florida State College). Not only did I learn the technical aspects of using studio strobes, but I learned the importance of light--how you can manipulate it to paint your subject. This is also the defining moment when I fell in love with portraiture...and the beauty of the female form.

"There are two types of photographers: the people photographers and the object photographers. They always prefer and feel more passionate for one more than the other."

This is when I found out exactly which one I was.

Here is DAY THREE: When I first moved to St. Augustine 5 years ago, I did my share of trespassing inside abandoned places and spaces. Here is my friend Olivia (and one of the most fearless models) who climbed into the rafters at the old school house in Lincolnville. Many of these places have been made inaccessible now—even to the best climbers—so I am glad I got there when I could.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you an image from my first 'real client' (as in, I didn't know her prior) BOUDOIR shoot!

In my current studio, I now have the luxury to work in both natural light and strobe lighting, but back in the day when I first started, all I had was a little dark room in my apartment: I had to use artificial light.

That little dark room, tile-floored, mustard-yellow walls and all, changed my life. All of a sudden everything snowballed. Friends told their friends, who told their friends, and so on. Every week, week after week, I would shoot clients all weekend long, then I would drag myself to my day job Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. And then I would spend hours upon hours editing all of these photos from the moment I got home from work to the moment I went to bed. Let's just say I was a little exhausted after awhile...

Something had to give. This awesome niche had fallen in my lap--And I loved it! Strangers wanted to pay me to do this! What?!

I quit that day job less than 6 months after I took this image.

Freedom and Self-Employment:
It was the journey I had been seeking, but didn't know it yet.

DAY FOUR: Going back to hard drive 2012/2013. Here's an awesome photo of Phil Grech, one of my most dynamic subjects and friends. Dinner parties always turned photo shoot then and I miss the days we all lived down the street from one another.

DAY FOUR: Lindsay

This image is one of hundreds of photos I've taken of this little lady. She was always willing to let me use her as my muse, practice my lighting and experiment with my editing. I loved how all of our 'shoots' always started off with us goofing off for the first 20 minutes and her dancing around to Lil Boosie while I take my light test shots. Thank you Courtney for always letting me take ya pitcha over the years!

This "challenge" got me thinking how lovely it has been to swoon over images of my fellow photographer friends and to see the stories behind their images. We are constantly bombarded with photos of our friends and families daily lives on Facebook but rarely receive the full description to what these moments mean to them.

Today, I leave you with one of my favorite photos (yet to be shared!) from Angkor Wat, Cambodia. It's about 6am and Hardus and I witnessed a disappointing overcast sunrise at Angkor. It was drizzling and we were eating "donuts" Cambodian style—a circular loaf of bread with sugar on top—and sitting to the side of the main temple. When I look at this photo, I remember the moments of rest we had during a busy days travel— we'd sit and let our minds try to comprehend where we were. How we got here. Our clothes were wet and soggy but our minds were taking everything in. In these moments, there was no one else in the world but us.

DAY FIVE: So of course this last one has to be of my fur babies, Walter and Louie.

These 18 pound knuckleheads have really brought a lot of happiness to my life. They put a smile on my face everyday with their funny faces and wild-beast-like snoring. They are so sweet and goofy--its like having two cartoon characters running around my house. Always down to snuggle, and always down to go on an adventure outside.

Its true what they say: Pugs are like potato chips, you can't have just one. :)

Hope you enjoyed our posts!

Beautiful Blonde Bombshell Boudoir Photoshoot Testimonial

Makeup by Amanda Hopcraft
Boudoir Before and After Jacksonville Photographer

What inspired you to do a boudoir photoshoot and why did you choose Bad Girl Boudoir?
I had always wanted to try a professional photo shoot but was intimidated and could never find a photographer who interested me or that I felt would make me feel comfortable so I gave up on the idea for awhile. Being at a stage in life where I wanted to do something fun and exciting for myself, I looked into a Boudoir photo shoot. I found Bad Girl Boudoir on the Internet and was immediately impressed and got an overall good feeling based on the photos I was seeing and the detailed explanation of the process. I booked my shoot immediately and from the minute I booked Lindsay was professional, responsive and excited along with me to start the process.

What were your feelings leading up to your session?
I was nervous but very excited that I finally took the step to do this. I scheduled a pre-shoot consultation so I could see the studio and meet Lindsay. I was immediately put at ease after this meeting. Lindsay is very personable and professional and the studio is very inviting. My nervousness disappeared and I became even more excited seeing all the sample prints and discussing ideas for my upcoming shoot.

Tell us about your experience with Bad Girl Boudoir...
Overall the whole experience was fabulous! The day of the shoot I brought several outfit options (a suitcase full to be exact) and Lindsay did an excellent job helping me narrow down what looks to use. Then came hair and make-up. This was a good time for me to relax a little while getting primped and chatting with Lindsay and Amanda. When they were finished, I loved what I saw in the mirror. I got so many compliments after the shoot that I actually asked Lindsay to instruct me on how she did my hair as well as info on make-up that was used. After hair and make-up, I put on my first outfit and we got started with the shoot. I was a little unsure when we first started about how I would pose and facial expressions but again I had nothing to fear. Lindsay coached me every step of the way until I eventually got the hang of it. After each set of photos, Lindsay would show me the pictures on her camera and I could not believe how great the photos looked and that who I was seeing was me. This made me even more confident and at ease and the rest of the shoot was fun and exciting. The experience after the shoot was also very good. The turn around time for seeing my photo gallery was very quick and Lindsay did an excellent job responding to all my inquiries in a timely manner. I ordered a photo book and 4 canvas prints and I love them all!

You did this as a gift for yourself, how do you feel now after you did it?
I feel wonderful not only because I loved the way I looked but also because I finally made this happen and I'm so grateful Bad Girl Boudoir was there to help me achieve this goal. I also now have some gorgeous canvas prints displayed which is a great confidence booster!

What's your advice for future clients looking to have a boudoir photoshoot?
Definitely book with Bad Girl Boudoir. Put all worries, doubts and insecurities aside. Lindsay will make you feel so at ease that by the end of the shoot you will feel like a natural. The photo's turn out amazing and you will thank yourself when you see the finished product. I am already looking forward to booking another session!
